Omiyage is a Japanese tradition that has been adopted into modern local Hawaii culture. It is the act of bringing back gifts from your travels for friends, relatives, and co-workers. When traveling to the mainland, local Hawaii residents will bringing back items from stores not found in the islands. A popular place to shop for omiyage gifts is Trader Joe’s.

Inspiration

On a recent trip, a co-worker returned with Trader Joe’s Olive & Herbs Mixed Nuts – a savory mix of mixed nuts and dehydrated olives. It’s a really delicious mix, different from most trail mixes. I was fascinated with the olives but haven’t quite perfected the method for dehydrating them, but I’m working on it. For now, I have these herb mixed nuts to satisfy the snack attack monster inside of me.

Herb Roasted Mixed Nuts

Description

These herb roasted mixed nuts are delicious for snacking and perfect for gifting. These nuts have a lot of herby goodness with a touch of sweetness and a bit of heat.


Ingredients

Scale

2 cups roasted unsalted mixed nuts

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon maple syrup

1 tablespoon dried herb blend (like Herbes de Provence)

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

1 teaspoon kosher salt


Instructions

Preheat oven to 275 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with foil and lightly spray with cooking spray.

In a bowl, mix together all the ingredients. Spread the mixture in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes* until golden, stirring once halfway through.

Allow to cool fully before serving or storing in an airtight container.

Notes

*Bake for 30 minutes if using raw nuts.
