Hawaii Feasting: Lunch Edition Part 2

January 7, 2022

This is a continuation of the Hawaii Feasting lunch edition post from last fall. It highlights more lunch spots that are accessible if you are working in or visiting the downtown Honolulu area.

‘ili ‘ili Cash & Carry

The shop’s name hides the fact that this is a gem of an Italian deli and pizzeria. ‘ili ‘ili offers delicious, generous sandwiches and yummy pizzas (both traditional and Sicilian-style). But for our family, the star is the Choke Garlic Bread – a generous serving  (the cover doesn’t close on the container because it is so full) of delicious, garlicy, buttery fried dough balls with or without crispy pepperoni.

La Birria Food Truck

When La Birria operated their second food truck in Kakaako we were able to enjoy their delicious take on the birria taco. Unfortunately for us, at the moment they only have the truck out in Pearlridge which is a bit too far for us to make the trek at lunch. But if you don’t have the time/distance restraints that we do, it’s worth the trip.

Lam’s Kitchen

Lam’s Kitchen in Honolulu’s Chinatown district is known for its homemade look fun (rice noodles) and you tiao (Chinese fried donuts). The restaurant isn’t far from our office and was already crowded at 10:30 AM when we went to pick up our order. My co-worker told me he was in charge of ordering and got us each a bowl of beef flank and tendon look fun soup and a side order of you tiao. It was filling and delicious!

Poke by the Pound

As the name indicates, Poke by the Pound specializes in a variety of fresh pokes. But they also sell deliciously prepared cooked fish plates. My current favorite is the furikake salmon with butter-teriyaki sauce. My co-workers swear by the ahi belly with butter-shoyu sauce. You can get a side of poke with any plate (or buy a full pound to eat later).

Tacos La Marea Taqueria

Tacos La Marea was one of several offering Hawaii its first taste of birria tacos – the delicious soft tacos filled served with a braising sauce dip. They also offer a selection of street-style tacos, burritos, and daily specials. The elote street corn and homemade salsas are amazing too.
