One of my favorite Disney World treats was the Rice Krispie Treat from the Main Street Confectionery at Magic Kingdom. These treats were made fresh in a huge copper pot in the front window at the shop. They weren’t cut in special Mickey shapes; just big squares of gooey deliciousness.
We loved these treats so much we would buy a dozen to bring home with us as a sweet, edible memory of our trip. And we weren’t alone. There is even a discussion forum of people with fond memories of those treats.
Unfortunately, at some point, Disney farmed out the mass production of these treats. They are no longer made fresh at the confectionery and, sadly, the quality and taste reflects this change.
So when my friend told me she had treats that were as good as the Disney treats, I couldn’t wait to try them. There are endless numbers of recipes for Mars Bar or Milky Way treats (we will get into the difference below). But unfortunately when I tried them, they didn’t evoke the taste and texture of those lost Disney treats. Granted, the bar was set terribly high, but the experience was disappointing just the same. It was here that my quest to find a Disney-like treat was born.

Why it works
This recipe differs from the standard, back-of-the-box Rice Krispie Treats recipe and the other Milky Way treat recipes I found:
- There is significantly more butter in this recipe than the standard, back-of-the-box recipe
- Instead of only using marshmallows, half the marshmallows are replaced with Milky Way bars giving the treats richness from the nougat, caramel, and chocolate
- Because they are made in a 9″ x 9″ pan instead of a 9″ x 13″ pan, the treats are thicker and gooey-er.
These differences alone make a fantastic Rice Krispie Treat that is reminiscent of that Disney treat. And while the treats are delicious unadorned, a drizzle of chocolate takes it to the next level perfect for an everyday snack. But for special occasions, add a few festive sprinkles for fun.

Candy Confusion: Milky Way vs Mars Bar
For reasons having to do with family feuds that you can read about here, the U.S. has the Milky Way and much of the rest of the world has the Mars Bar. They are similar in that they are a mixture of nougat, caramel, and chocolate and each candy bar has its own die-hard fan base. For the purpose of this recipe, they can be used interchangeably so use the candy bar that is easiest to get in your country.

Milky Way Rice Krispie Treats
- Total Time: 2 hours, 15 minutes
- Yield: 16 1x
Description
Chocolate, nougat, and caramel from Milky Way Bars combine with gooey marshmallows for an updated version of the classic lunch box treat.
Ingredients
½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
4 – 1.869-ounce Milky Way bars (about 7.5 ounces total), roughly chopped*
5 ounces marshmallows (about 20 regular size, not mini marshmallows)
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
Candy sprinkles for decorating, optional
Instructions
Grease a 9″ x 9″ square baking pan. Line with parchment paper for easy removal. Set aside.
In a large pot, melt the butter over low heat.
Add the marshmallows and stir for about 2 minutes. Add the chopped Milky Way bars and continue to stir as the chocolate bars and marshmallows melt.
Continuously stir until the mixture is smooth and everything is fully incorporated. If it looks like the mixture is separating, remove from the heat and stir until smooth.
Once fully melted, remove from the heat and quickly stir in the Rice Krispie cereal.
Turn out the mixture into the prepared pan and firmly press down by using a silicone spatula or your hands, sprayed with cooking spray to keep the mixture from sticking. (I like to use the butter wrapper). Let cool in the pan.
While the squares are cooling, gently melt the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Microwave at 20 second intervals, stirring thoroughly each time, until the chocolate is melted. Be careful not to burn it.
Let cool slightly before drizzling the melted chocolate over the Rice Krispie squares (I place the chocolate in a zip-top sandwich bag and snip off a tiny corner and drizzle the chocolate from the bag.) You can decorate with candy sprinkles of your choice if you desire.
Let the squares cool for 2 hours at room temperature or until the chocolate is hardened then cut into squares with a sharp knife and serve.
Notes
*Outside of the U.S., Milky Way bars or often known as Mars bars. The Mars bars in the U.S. are completely different from those found elsewhere.
