Milky Way Rice Krispie Treats

  • Author: She's Almost Always Hungry

Description

Chocolate, nougat, and caramel from Milky Way Bars combine with gooey marshmallows for an updated version of the classic lunch box treat.

Ingredients

Scale

½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

41.869-ounce Milky Way bars (about 7.5 ounces total), roughly chopped*

5 ounces marshmallows (about 20 regular size, not mini marshmallows)

6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

½ cup semisweet chocolate chips

Candy sprinkles for decorating, optional

Instructions

Grease a 9″ x 9″ square baking pan. Line with parchment paper for easy removal. Set aside.

In a large pot, melt the butter over low heat.

Add the marshmallows and stir for about 2 minutes. Add the chopped Milky Way bars and continue to stir as the chocolate bars and marshmallows melt.

Continuously stir until the mixture is smooth and everything is fully incorporated. If it looks like the mixture is separating, remove from the heat and stir until smooth.

Once fully melted, remove from the heat and quickly stir in the Rice Krispie cereal.

Turn out the mixture into the prepared pan and firmly press down by using a silicone spatula or your hands, sprayed with cooking spray to keep the mixture from sticking. (I like to use the butter wrapper). Let cool in the pan.

While the squares are cooling, gently melt the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Microwave at 20 second intervals, stirring thoroughly each time, until the chocolate is melted. Be careful not to burn it.

Let cool slightly before drizzling the melted chocolate over the Rice Krispie squares (I place the chocolate in a zip-top sandwich bag and snip off a tiny corner and drizzle the chocolate from the bag.) You can decorate with candy sprinkles of your choice if you desire.

Let the squares cool for 2 hours at room temperature or until the chocolate is hardened then cut into squares with a sharp knife and serve.

Notes

*Outside of the U.S., Milky Way bars or often known as Mars bars. The Mars bars in the U.S. are completely different from those found elsewhere.
